Few months back Google greeted all of us with a new refreshed logo.Within few minutes, the people started talking about it and the #googlenewlogo just became viral all over the internet in a matter of few seconds. Re-branding was never a new thing for google. As a matter of fact , the current logo is google’s 6th revamp to its logo .But the latest revamp of the Google logo is the biggest since 1998. Previous logo changes haven’t been so strikingly different from its predecessor.
In plain sight the logo is just a google written in a new sans serif font .But in fact there is more than that. That’s what make the new logo much more interesting. So with no further adieu lets get in to that
Top Five Hidden Facts In Google’s New Logo
Fact 1:The size of the new logo is just 305 bytes !!!
Yes you heard it right ,its just 302 bytes. If you are thinking that is it a big deal.YES IT IS…The previous logo was almost 2145 bytes and compared to that the new logo is only just a fraction of the previous logo’s size. And this helps load up the google much faster than before.
So let me explain how its even possible.
The previous logo was created with serif fonts ,which are much complicated and can only be build with brezier curves as shown below
As shown in the image each brezier curve is made up with an anchor point. And in the previous google logo ,altogether there was 100 anchor points resulting in a 6380 bytes file, which was further compressed to get a 2145 byte file .On the other hand the simplified new logo is entirely created with just circles and rectangles.
By eliminating most of the anchor points the new logo just takes up only 302 bytes. The new logo only consists of
- 10 circles-2 for each the capital G and lower case g, 2 for each O, and 2 for the e
- 5 rectangles-2 for the capital G, 1 for the lower case l, 2 for the e)
- 1 shape -Its made with 7 anchor points (the descender on the lower-case g)
Fact 2:Hidden geometrical Perfections
Even thou some details are so small and can be missed by a person they play an important role in the perfection of the final logo just like this tiny detail. Its actually so simple, the edge of g and the tilted inner plane of the letter e can be joined with a straight line. This tiny detail keeps the steady flow of the logo.
FUN FACT:That slight tilt is given to the letter e with an intention.this can also be seen in the previous google logo. The unusual e is a reminder that Google will “always be a bit unconventional.”
The simplified google G logo has also given keen interest in such details. It is designed on the same grid as google’s product iconography, the circular shape was optically refined to prevent a visual “overbite” at the point where the circular form meets the crossbar.
Fact 3:The colors of the new logo is different
The re branding of the logo is all about being new.So google decided to add a little bit of pop to its colors. This decision was made because most of the displays used these days are Full HD or 4K with exceptional colors .In the four colors ,excluding blue the other three got a little more pop to it the color changes are as shown below
- Green #0f9d58 to #34a853
- yellow #f4b400 to #fbb305
- red #db4437 to #ea4335
Fact 4:Always on Golden Ratio
The new logo is strict on its ratios. It always keeps the golden ratio wherever possible .As shown in the figure above the the spacing between letters and the logo keeps the golden ratio and further more detailed preview of golden ratio is depicted in the first video in this article.if you dont know what is golden ratio.in short it is a ratio which can be seen in everything beautiful around us.it is believed that of an object keeps its dimensions in golden ratio the human brain accepts it as an beautiful object.so artists always try to keep things according to golden ratio.
Fact 5:The new Font
In addition to the new logotype, Google has created a new san-serif typeface called Product Sans. The new font will be used to name Google products and maintain an appropriate level of distinction between the Google logotype and the product name. The consistency and familiarity was the main two key stones while developing this new font. Simple, humble, and approachable, Product Sans was created from scratch to pair seamlessly with the logo in a variety of contexts and product lockups without overshadowing it. Additionally, it complements the new identity by introducing a primary branding typeface that is different in style and character from other interface text elements used in Material Design. With its careful weaving of form and function, it is an appropriate and essential component to the Google brand system.
